Football tournaments come and go, but they tend to leave a mark on the British home. With the FIFA 2026 World Cup now finished, furniture retailer Furniture Village has been looking back at the search behaviour recorded around the previous tournament in 2022, and the figures give a good sense of how the nation gears up for a summer of football.
The headline number is striking; sofa searches climbed by 50% in the months before the 2022 tournament kicked off. Furniture Village expected a similar pattern to unfold ahead of 2026, arguing that a home upgrade has quietly become part of the pre-tournament ritual for many households, right alongside stocking the fridge and checking the fixture list.
Comfort, Not Just Seating
Mark Reynolds, Director of Buying, Upholstery & Home Accessories at Furniture Village, puts the trend down to changing expectations around how people watch football. “Drawing on over 35 years of expertise in sourcing world-class comfort, we expected a significant spike in searches for hosting-ready sofas,” he says. “Our advice was always to shop early or look for quick delivery options to be ready for the first whistle.”
That appetite for comfort has increasingly meant technology. Interest in tech sofas from Furniture Village has grown steadily, with shoppers drawn to features such as built-in charging points and immersive sound that turn an ordinary living room into something closer to a home cinema.
Counting the Corners
Not every household is chasing gadgets, though. For many, it simply comes down to fitting more people onto one sofa. Corner sofas were by far the most searched shape ahead of the 2022 World Cup, averaging 160,200 searches a month, a figure that dwarfs every other style on the list. It is not hard to see why: with UK kick-off times often falling in the evening during 2026, extra seating capacity was likely to be in high demand across the country.
Other shapes recorded a smaller, but still notable, rise over the same period:
- U-shaped sofas, 31,200 searches
- Modular sofas, 18,420 searches
- Recliner sofas, 2,980 searches
- Sectional sofas, 2,200 searches
A Purchase Meant to Last
A World Cup lasts a matter of weeks, and 2026’s edition ran to more than 9,300 minutes of football, but a new sofa is meant to outlive the tournament by years. That was reflected in the popularity of leather sofas ahead of 2022, which saw 40,820 searches, likely thanks to their reputation for being easy to clean after an excitable celebration or two. Furniture Village backs its own range with a free 20-year structural guarantee, positioning a World Cup purchase as a long-term investment rather than a short-term fix.
The Small Details Add Up
It is not always the big-ticket features that catch a shopper’s eye. Searches for sofas with built-in cup holders rose to 712 ahead of the 2022 tournament, a modest number next to corner sofas, but a telling one all the same. It suggests that fans were thinking about the finer points of the viewing experience, right down to where they would rest a drink during a penalty shootout.
Looking Beyond the Tournament
Furniture Village is keen to stress that this is not a trend limited to football season. “A sofa that provided a stadium atmosphere during the World Cup becomes a home cinema hub tomorrow,” Reynolds says. “It’s an investment in your home’s social future, far beyond the final whistle.”
Now that the tournament has drawn to a close, the 2022 figures suggest the appetite for comfortable, tech-ready seating is unlikely to fade with the football. If anything, the retailer expects households to keep reaching for sofas that can double up for film nights, family gatherings and whatever the next major sporting event brings.
